Schools, Valditara: "We will hire over 54,000 teachers next year, a record."

The minister's announcement
"We plan to provide greater guarantees of educational continuity for students and stability for teachers." Nearly 14,000 students are in support, over 6,000 in religion.

Over 54,000 new teachers have been hired: more than 48,000, including nearly 14,000 special education teachers and over 6,000 religion teachers. The announcement comes with the signing of the decree regulating teacher hiring in state schools of all levels for the 2025/2026 school year, according to Minister of Education Giuseppe Valditara , who called it a record-breaking announcement.
"By September, we will be hiring over 54,000 teachers, including general, support, and religion teaching positions," the minister stated. "A record number. We hope to thus provide greater guarantees of educational continuity for students and stability for teachers. We have paid particular attention to teaching continuity for support, aware of its importance for the most vulnerable students. Regarding Catholic religion teaching, we are completing the largest tenure-track hiring in the last twenty years."
A total of 48,504 positions are available, including 13,860 support positions. A subsequent Ministerial Decree will also regulate the hiring of 6,022 religion teachers, following the competition announced in 2024. The last procedure dates back to 2004. Regarding general and support positions, the actual assignment of quotas to individual competition classes will now be established by the Regional School Offices ( USR ), which will manage the relevant procedures, based on the vacant positions and the number of applicants existing at the territorial level.
Once the distribution has been determined by the USRs, the candidates included at provincial level in the exhausted rankings and the winners still present in the regional rankings of the 2016, 2018 and 2020 competitions can be hired. By far the largest number of hires will be made using the rankings of the competitions announced in 2023 and 2024 (the so-called “PNRR1” and “PNRR2” competitions) with a view to the full implementation of the challenging European targets of the PNRR.
To maximize the hiring of support teachers, any unfilled positions not filled through these procedures will be filled by specialized teachers in the first tier of the provincial rankings for support substitutes. If positions are filled in their home province, applicants may apply for the remaining positions in other provinces within the same region or in provinces within a different region, of their choice.
